Chamei

An artistic name bestowed by the Oiemoto through one’s teacher. Within the Urasenke tradition, an artistic name is comprised of two Chinese characters. A character taken from one’s given name follows the prefix “so” meaning true.

In other schools this might be called Chago instead.

This practice is similar to the Buddhist practice of giving a new name to a student when the have reached a certain level.
