Hounsai Daisosho

Born 19th of April 1923.

Personal name: Hōsō Sōshitsu XV (Sen Genshitsu) 汎叟 宗室

Zen name: Hōunsai 鵬雲斎

Also known as: Dr. Soshitsu Sen XV

He studied economics at Doushisha University in Kyoto. And graduate studies at the University of Hawaii. Also known as Dr. Sen Genshitsu.

He became the 15th generation Oiemoto of Urasenke in October 1964. January 1st, 2003 his son succeeded him as the 16th generation Oiemoto. At this point Hounsai became known as Hounsai Daisosho.

It is an especially Japanese sensibility towards beauty to cut away and cut away, abbreviating to the point where nothing more can be removed and thereby creating a thing of great beauty.

“In my own hands I hold a bowl of tea; I see all of nature represented in its green color. Closing my eyes I find green mountains and pure water within my own heart. Silently, sitting alone, drinking tea, I feel these become part of me. Sharing this bowl of tea with others, they, too, become one with it and nature. That we can find a lasting tranquility in our own selves in the company of others is the paradox that is the Way of Tea.”
