Yugaeshi is the process of scooping hot water with a hishaku and returning the water immediately to the kama. Exposing the hishaku momentarily to hot water allows it to dry more quickly in preparation for display on a tana.

Yugaeshi is performed in cases where the mizusashi does not sit directly on the tatami. In most cases this corresponds to cases where the hishaku is displayed at the end of the temae, but in some cases it is not, as when using an ōita.
